Latitude Art Gallery, located in Calgary’s Design District along 11th Avenue SW, wants to integrate art into life. “Art sets the mood for a space. The artwork that we want to bring to a space is something that sparks emotion, starts conversations and brings a sense of joy,” says Jessica Ullathorne, Latitude's director of sales and marketing.
Scott Beitel opened Latitude Art Gallery in 2007, the result of his lifelong passion for art. Latitude showcases original, contemporary art by Canadian artists who range from emerging to established. The gallery represents 30 artists from across Canada, including Lisa Kozokowsky, a Calgary-based artist. Kozokowsky works with a combination of oils, metal and encaustics (a technique that involves painting with hot wax) to portray Western Canadian landscapes in an “imaginative and abstract style,” says Jessica. From the other end of the country is Stephanie Rivet, a French-Canadian artist from Montreal. “Rivet's paintings are abstracts, inspired by nature. She employs an energetic and vibrant use of colour, as she applies the paint to the canvas entirely with a palette knife,” explains Jessica.
Pauline Paquin, also French-Canadian, has recently been added to the gallery's roster of artists. “Each of Paquin's paintings are imaginative and dreamlike, bringing us back to our own childhood,” says Jessica.
