Patten Funeral Home has served the Glace Bay community since the 1930s, when it was established as Louden Funeral Service. Today, the funeral home provides funeral and cremation as a member of the Dignity Memorial® network. From the moment you give us a call or walk through our doors, you are in the best possible hands. The staff at Patten Funeral Home is so dedicated and the service so exemplary, that we've won awards and accolades. Personalized touches

We offer everything from a wholly traditional church funeral and cemetery burial to a modern celebration of life with live music, catering and a send-off that reflects the personality and passions of yourself or your loved one. Do you want a butterfly release? You got it. How about personalized golf balls as mementos? You can have those, too. What about chocolate cupcakes with purple frosting? The list is literally endless—and we attend to every detail.

Cremation services

Not everyone knows that there are many cremation options. If you are interested in cremation, the funeral home team can explain the process and different options. From a direct cremation without a memorial service or a witness cremation to a full funeral service before or after the cremation and more, we help you understand this increasingly common choice—and handle all of the cremation arrangements.

History

In 1949, licensed funeral director and embalmer James Patten purchased Louden Funeral Service in Glace Bay after managing the business since 1937. He subsequently renamed it Patten Funeral Home. In 1946, James's son, Fred, was discharged from the Canadian Forces and joined his father in providing funerals, burials and cremations to area families. They ran the business together until James died in 1966.

Fred then bought the Mason Wholesale site at 71 Union Street in the centre of town and that's where Patten Funeral Home remains until today. Fred hired Harvey A. Cameron, an experienced local embalmer, to manage the funeral home in 1979. When Fred retired in 1987, Harvey and Eric Lynk, a United Church minister, bought the business.

Eric left in the late 1990s to devote himself to the ministry full time and Harvey died in 2009. Today the staff of Patten Funeral Home continue in the tradition of compassionate care that started in the '30s.

Today, Patten Funeral Home is a member of the Dignity Memorial network of funeral, cremation and cemetery providers, and we are always here when you need us.
