I took the family to Chubb n Checker last weekend. We ordered the 2 for $5 burger promo and it was awsome. The kids loved the food. The burgers were truly 8OZ burgers. After that meal I was full the rest of the day. Will will be back and I will try the Philly Cheese steak next time. I am getting hungry just thinking of it.
The infamous "2 for $5" homemade burger deal is back, so I decided after a long time away to give the Chubb-n-Checker another try. I entered the restaurant at approximately 11:30am and asked for the deal. The female owner (an older woman who speaks broken english) was cleaning tables but rushed over to take my order. I asked for the special and she tried to upsell me on cheese, and bacon, and fries, or onion rings... and a drink. She is definitely "hard sell" and not in a pleasant kind of way. I placed my order and watched as the male owner (working in the kitchen) took two PRE-COOKED "fresh" hamburgers and slapped them on the grill. They were in a deep silver pan on the side of the grill, uncovered. ((This is NOT the first time I have seen them serve these pre-cooked burgers, but I had already paid, and was in a rush to get to work, so I let it slide.)) He was wearing an apron, but no other protection in the kitchen, no hairnet, or hat. All food is handled without hand-washing in between. The lunch rush started shortly after, mainly kids from the high school, ordering fries, or the hamburger special. Again, she tries to upsell like a demon, and the repetitive nature of her sales pitch is grating to say the least, as the restaurant is small and her voice travels. Maybe four kids order, for a total of maybe 5-6 hamburgers on the grill and a couple of orders of fries in the fryer. A couple had come in, with their newborn baby in tow, and had sat down at a booth. The gentleman comes up to the counter after talking to his wife, and asks for two meals off the breakfast menu. The female owner cuts him off in mid sentence and barks back at her husband if he is "doing breakfast". He says back (in equally broken english) "No.. I no do breakfast now, too busy. No room on grill. You wanna wait 15-20, you wait." This is in full view and earshot of the entire restaurant, the owner/cook telling a customer they can't order something off the ALL DAY BEAKFAST MENU. The menu clearly says ALL DAY. As the customers (who are willing to spend more for what they want then the kids coming in ordering fries and cheap hamburgers), my food comes up. Both of my burgers look wet and greasy, mainly due to the fact that they melt the cheese by spraying water onto the hot grill around the burgers and covering them with a lid. The buns are store-bought, cornmeal covered, and obviously not the fresh bakery buns of old. I have the young female employee (how she deals with the owners barking at her constantly I will never understand) dress my burgers, pack them up, and as I turn to leave I let the couple know of an all-day breakfast restaurant up the street that actually serves all-day breakfast. They thank me and we leave together. Even before I got to work I had resigned myself not to return to Chubb-n-Checker for the horrible customer service, but the food I had the misfortune of purchasing sealed the deal. In the five minutes it took to get to work, the burgers had gone cold, they were wet, the buns were soaked with water/oil both from the cooking process and the lettuce being damp. The meat had little to no flavor. The cheese and bacon I foolishly let myself be charged for was nasty. The bacon was undercooked and chewy. The cheese was a tiny pile in the middle of the burger, and not melted in the center. I will also point out that after adding bacon and cheese to each of the burgers, the 2 for 5 deal cost me almost $10. So long story short: below average food, questionable cooking practices, and ignorant owners. The burgers may be "homemade" but they certainly aren't cooked fresh, they are reheated.
Just recently changed Management/Ownership. Recipes on food have already begun to change. The Burgers have a delicious flavour as spices have been added. The onion rings are amazing. The owner's have indicated more changes will occur soon . 5 star rating.
The best food you can get for the cheapest price and that does not take away from the quality of food you get. The burgers are thick and juicy with a real homemade taste. There milkshakes are also exceptional. I would recommend banana.
